S.O.S.: 6999 Randy Gynn

We received word from Cam Ross via the local division of Commissionaires that on October 14th, Randy was admitted to the Jubilee Hospice Richmond Pavilion. Randy’s family was attending. Today we learned, and I have the sad honour of reporting to you, that Randy Gynn died in the very early morning of October 19th, 2017.

Randy served the club well, as he did the numerous organizations he was involved with. He served on our branch executive in several capacities over the years, including President, as well as the parent club. He will be remembered for his many contributions to society at large and will be missed.

At the 27 December 2016 Christmas Cadets At Home, Randy had a table with his family having brought them all to Victoria. The photo of Randy is from that event, courtesy of Don Lovell.

We have no word on arrangements or an obituary. Updates will follow.

Afghanistan Memorial – Dedication – Saturday, September 30, 2017

Please join Memorial Cross families; Her Honour, The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia; Directors of the Greater Victoria Afghanistan Memorial Project Society; and federal, provincial and municipal dignitaries for the dedication of the Victoria/ British Columbia Afghanistan Memorial, to be held Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the corner of Courtney Street and Quadra Street in Victoria. (Behind the Courthouse and across from Christ Church Anglican Cathedral.) [Link to Google Maps]

The event commences at 1215 with a performance and Call to Service by the Christ Church bell ringers. The music program starts at 1315, with parade arrival at 1345.

Her Honour, The Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, arrives at 1400 to begin the unveiling and dedication

The BC Afghanistan Memorial honours the more than 40,000 Canadians who served in Afghanistan, the 163 who died during the mission, those who returned with mental and physical wounds, and the families and loved ones of them all.

Ceremony organizers aim for as many Afghanistan War Veterans as can attend. Family members of, and those who knew Canadians who served during the Afghanistan Mission 2001-2014 are particularly welcome, as well. The General Public is invited and we ask that you disseminate this information to your family and friends.

Ex-cadets of all services and timeframes are most welcome and encouraged to attend.

The parade will have RCN, Army and RCAF Guards of 50 each, lead by the CScotR Pipes and Drums. The RCMP has been invited to form a guard but their staff shortage will most likely preclude their full participation. Ex-Cadets who served in Afghanistan are especially encouraged to attend and will be called forward to join The Afghanistan Guard, which will be reviewed by Her Honour.

Dress: Civilian or CF dress. Medals. Poppies: wear ’em if you got ’em! (1000 poppies will be available for the general public.)

PS: The VIECC supported this project with a $500 donation this year.

[We note that there is also a “Media only” event: Memorial Installation: Tuesday, 26 September 2017 at 10:30 am. Obviously, one may attend as a private citizen to observe the installation. Please do not obstruct or obscure media access to this event.]
[Editorial: This post, originally published 06 Sep 2017, was edited on 07 Sep 2017 to remove the restrictive “British Columbia” in reference to Afghanistan War Veterans attending the ceremony, and to more specifically detail the event schedule in the text.]

CANCELLATION NOTICE: Thu 07 Sep 2017 Monthly Luncheon

Your Executive has decided to CANCEL the Season Opener Monthly Luncheon that was to be held at the CFB Esquimalt Wardroom on Thursday, September 07, 2017.

For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that the Wardroom Galley is temporarily shutdown for repairs and maintenance, AND the consecutive timing of the RRU Homecoming Weekend, September 08, 2017 to September 10, 2017, we deemed it prudent and necessary to CANCEL the usual September Luncheon, rather than reschedule or relocate this month’s luncheon.

Regular luncheons will resume Thursday, October 05, 2017 at the CFB Esquimalt Wardroom, and will repeat monthly on the first Thursday of each month thereafter, through June, 2018.

—————————————————–

A NOTE REGARDING RRU HOMECOMING: RRU has extended the registration deadline for the Homecoming Weekend events until Thursday, August 31, 2017. (You may need to call RRU directly, if the website doesn’t accept your click. [Tel: (250)391-2511 or Toll Free: 1(800)788-8028) or contact them by email (alumni.relations@royalroads.ca]) Registration for the Friday night President’s Reception is $10. The full weekend is more. The President’s Reception event starts at (1730 for) 1800 in the Hatley Castle Drawing Room, President Allan Cahoon speaks at 1830, and the event wraps up at 2130. Dinner/ Dance Saturday night on the Grant Block Quarterdeck. Mast Ceremony, Circle Walk, and Coffee in the Castle commence at 1030, Sunday.

RCMP Musical Ride

A note that the RCMP Musical Ride will be parading in Greater Victoria this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday, the 26th and 27th of August at Topaz Park (26th) and the old Lower Playing Field at RRU (27th). Both events are FREE to the public.

While we are not directly involved, our Vice-President, Dave Bindernagel, has been assisting in coordination and liaison for the RRU event.
