Passing of another VIECC member – 3543 Walter Niemy Celebration of Life

Please find below the obituary and information provided by Dave Wightman regarding the Celebration of Life for 3543 Walter Niemy.

Walter Niemy

Obituary

NIEMY, Walter Walter Niemy, CD, Brigadier-General, RCAF (Retired), passed away peacefully in Sidney, BC on Friday, 14 June, 2017 in his 85th year, while surrounded by his family. Walt was born in Montreal, attended schools there and in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, entered and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada Class of 1956 with Pilot Wings, and completed his Bachelor in Applied Science after one year at the University of Toronto. Walt was an officer of commanding stature, enquiring mind, demanding intellect and determination, all of which contributed to his most successful career as a fighter pilot, squadron commander, and test pilot followed by command of the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment and Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada. Following retirement from the Air Force in 1988, his leadership continued as a Vice-President of Canadair and subsequently President of Bombardier Defence Systems Division. He received the C.D. Howe Award in 2006 for his achievements and overall leadership in Canadian aeronautics and space activities. Retiring again in 1994, after which the Niemy’s moved to Canmore, Alberta and while skiing in Colorado, Walt suffered a ski accident that left him a quadriplegic. Following a period of treatment and rehabilitation in Toronto, and being told he would never walk again, the Niemy’s moved to Sidney, BC in 2002. There, through grit, determination, and regular therapy, Walt became able to walk with the assistance of a walker for several blocks. In 2013 Walt suffered a major setback with the accidental death of Donna Diane Niemy, his beloved wife and partner of 57 years. His mind and sharp, critical thinking never deteriorated although he effectively lost his eyesight two years ago. Walter Niemy was an amazing man of heroic proportions, coping with his life-changing accident with incredible optimism, courage and determination – an outstanding example and inspiration to all who knew him. He will indeed be missed by his many friends and former colleagues, but especially by his immediate family Peter, Eric and Carole, and by his brother Roman and extended family in Toronto. Memorial donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. To offer a condolence please visit www.earthsoption.com.

Our oldest son, Peter, entered Royal Roads in 1973 and I’ve always understood that my grandfather went to RMC in the 1890’s.

It is with immense sadness we say goodbye to a wonderful husband, father, & granddad. He leaves to mourn his wife of 51 years Margaret, daughters Jennifer (Dave) Calow, Heather (Dave) Goertzen, grandchildren Brittany. Kennedy, Jack, Max, & Leo. Ron was born & raised in Calgary & after graduating from Royal Military College enjoyed a 35 year flying career. In the Air Force he flew both jets & helicopters & a highlight was his year in Maryland attending the US Navy Test Pilot School & completing his military career as a test pilot at AETE, the Aerospace & Engineering Test Establishment. in Cold Lake Alberta. Following retirement from the Air Force Marg & Ron moved to Edmonton where Ron continued to fly helicopters for an additional 10 years for the Alberta Government & STARS Air Ambulance, before retiring to Comox in 2004. Ron was an avid who enjoyed sailing, diving, hiking, jogging & skiing & as his illness progressed walking became his passion. He & Marg enjoyed many great travel experiences together & made many friends along the way, especially the last few years wintering in Mexico. Ron’s amazing life was filled with love, loyalty, kindness, integrity & an endearing sense of humour. He will be missed by his family & many friends. Many thanks to Dr. Potter-Cogan, Robert his Neurophysiotherapist, his caregivers, nursing staff at St. Joseph’s & Hospice. I would also like to send a heartfelt Thank you to all the amazing friends who supported us along this painful journey. If wishing donations in Ron’s memory they can be made to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Please join us at 888 Wing Comox ‪August 12 from 2-4‬ for a sharing of memories of Ron.

Death Notice: 5336 Dr A.E. (Art) Burgess – Class of ’62

The following was received yesterday afternoon, June 18, 2017, from Les East:

“I regret to inform the Club of the passing of Art Burgess.

Art passed away at 1300 hrs in St Paul’s hospital Vancouver today, June 18 2017. Daughter Sarah was at his side.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year, and asked that it be kept secret. In March, it was then obvious to Art his future was limited. He was still hoping to relocate to his summer residence on PEI as per his norm – but as the months passed and his condition worsened, he started making plans to just stay in Victoria & move into a seniors’ residence where he could get care.

Late May his doctor decided to put him in hospital here (RJH) for further testing. After two weeks there, his daughter came over from her home in Vancouver & had him transferred to St Paul’s hospital. He lasted about 10 days before his demise. Sarah said he passed in peace.

Tough go… Art was attending our RMC luncheons for the last few years & enjoying the comraderie with the guys – particularly after the lunch, when a handful of mates from our class, & ahead/behind, would relocate to the lounge at the wardroom with a coffee to discuss world events. Art had been living alone, with his favourite cat, in the Cook St Village area.

RIP Art.”

Art was an Old Brigade Life Member of the Club. Further information will be published when available.
