Death Notice: 5336 Dr A.E. (Art) Burgess – Class of ’62

The following was received yesterday afternoon, June 18, 2017, from Les East:

“I regret to inform the Club of the passing of Art Burgess.

Art passed away at 1300 hrs in St Paul’s hospital Vancouver today, June 18 2017. Daughter Sarah was at his side.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year, and asked that it be kept secret. In March, it was then obvious to Art his future was limited. He was still hoping to relocate to his summer residence on PEI as per his norm – but as the months passed and his condition worsened, he started making plans to just stay in Victoria & move into a seniors’ residence where he could get care.

Late May his doctor decided to put him in hospital here (RJH) for further testing. After two weeks there, his daughter came over from her home in Vancouver & had him transferred to St Paul’s hospital. He lasted about 10 days before his demise. Sarah said he passed in peace.

Tough go… Art was attending our RMC luncheons for the last few years & enjoying the comraderie with the guys – particularly after the lunch, when a handful of mates from our class, & ahead/behind, would relocate to the lounge at the wardroom with a coffee to discuss world events. Art had been living alone, with his favourite cat, in the Cook St Village area.

RIP Art.”

Art was an Old Brigade Life Member of the Club. Further information will be published when available.

Passing of Dave Rutherford – RRMC Head Gardener; Friend of Hatley Park

We have been informed that Dave Rutherford, former Head Gardener of RRMC, passed away 10 May 2017.

Don Lovell, our Treasurer wrote this short memorial:

“Dave started work at Royal Roads Military College in 1970 as a Gardener. He was Head Gardener in 1995 at the closing of Roads. Dave was made Manager of Grounds and Gardens for Royal Roads University and retired in 2010. Dave served as a Director for RRU and was a long serving member, Director and Treasurer of The Friends of Hatley Park.

Over the past few months I was able to visit Dave in his beautiful home in Sooke which he built. The attention to detail, the Arts & Crafts design with some references to Hatley Castle were evident throughout. I will remember Dave as a devoted family man, of keen intelligence with a caring and gentle approach to life.”

Dave’s obituary is here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timescolonist/obituary.aspx?n=dave-rutherford&pid=185480141
